Understanding Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is a type of hydraulic fluid that is used in vehicle hydraulic brake and clutch applications. It is in charge of converting force into pressure and amplifying braking force. Simply put, when you press your foot against the brake pedal, brake fluid converts this force into pressure on the front and rear brakes, causing the vehicle to stop. Because liquids are incompressible, it works.

Moisture is one of the most significant factors that can impair the performance of a vehicle’s brake fluid. As brake fluid ages, it can absorb trace amounts of moisture from its surroundings, including the air; this is known as hygroscopic absorption. When brake fluid becomes too moist, problems can arise when the fluid becomes hot during braking, causing the moisture to evaporate inside the brake lines. This results in a soft, spongy brake pedal feel and prevents your car from braking as effectively as it should.

There are primarily three types of brake oils on the market: DOT3, DOT4, DOT5, and DOT5. 1

  1. DOT 3: Glycol-based DOT3 brake oil is the most widely used on the market. This brake fluid has been on the market for a very long time. Despite its age, it is still widely used due to its low cost-to-performance ratio. In that regard, the boiling point of brand new DOT3 brake oil is approximately 205 degrees Celsius. Failure to change the brake oil can cause the oil to overheat. This will reduce the vehicle’s braking bite.
  2. DOT 4: The DOT4 is a slightly more expensive alternative. This, too, is a glycol-based brake oil, but the composition is different. DOT4 brake oil can withstand temperatures of up to 230 degrees Celsius due to its unique composition. Furthermore, by simply adding some additives, we can reduce the moisture buildup inside the system. Furthermore, these are best suited for vehicles equipped with ABS and TC.
  3. DOT 5: DOT5 brake fluid is one of the more expensive brake fluids. The fact that it is silicone-based is the best feature of DOT5 brake oil. Because of its chemical composition, DOT5 brake fluid can withstand temperatures as high as 260 degrees Celsius. Another advantage of this brake fluid is that it does not absorb water like glycol-based brake fluids. However, there are some issues with DOT5 oil. Furthermore, foam (lather) formation is relatively easy with this brake oil.
  4. DOT 5.1: The DOT 5.1 brake fluid is the one on the list that can withstand the highest temperatures. DOT 5.1 brake fluid, on the other hand, is a blend of borate ester and glycol ether. It can withstand temperatures as high as 260 degrees Celsius due to its complex composition. Furthermore, DOT 5.1 brake oil shares some properties with DOT 3 and DOT 4.
